Centennial Marching Band opened the talk between Jules Allen and Joe Lewis at Art Catalogues by playing on the BP Plaza before marching to Art Catalogues in the Ahmanson building at LACMA. We gathered to celebrate the publication of Marching Bands, Jules Allen's latest book, and to hear Jules and UC Irvine professor Joe Lewis in conversation about the complexity, pageantry and the contribution of Black Marching Bands.

The inpiration for this encounter is filmmaker Arthur Jafa's series titled Notebooks, 1990-2007--three ring binders which he has filled with clipped images to create filmic montages, or in his words, "markers that track my thoughts, my interests."
