Guy de Cointet: Tempo Rubato is the exhibition catalogue for the Fundación/Colección Jumex's 2012 show on the artist, whose work evolved dramatically over his career. A former fashion illustrator and assistant to sculptor Larry Bell, de Cointet became interested in the manipulation of visual language in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Based off the aesthetics of visual design, this work centers on graphic presentation of coded writing; anagrams, re-ordered words, and mirror writing appear frequently during this period. Tempo Rubato starts with this work and examines what happens next: as the 1970s went on, de Cointet's interest in language shifted from the visual to the aural and performative, as he started writing plays in which characters' use of language shifts from crushingly banal to opaquely literary. Tempo Rubato succeeds when it's at the extremes of the spectrum: de Cointet's sketchbooks reveal the fascinating construction of his codes, while the script for IGLU shows the results of the collision between communicative theater and obfuscated language.
