J. Patrice has held curatorial positions at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Detroit Institute of Arts. He has been Chief Curator of European Art at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art from October 1993 until his retirement in April 2017. During his career he received several fellowships and awards, including the Henri Focillon Fellowship at Yale University, and. Guggenheim Fellowship. He was made Commander of Arts and Letters by the French Republic.
