Jonathan Monk: Restaurant Drawings (2019)

Published by Karma, New York, 2019

552 pages, hardcover, 12 × 9 14 inches

Edition of 1,000

The process is simple: after a meal, Monk takes his receipt home and draws on it. The drawings are reproductions of iconic works by some of the leading figures of conceptual art - artists like Barbara Kruger, Ed Ruscha, Donald Judd, Richard Prince, Christopher Wool, On Kawara, David Hammons, and others. Monk then posts an image of the receipt drawing on Instagram and adds below it the name of the artist he is referencing. The price of Monk's meal determines the price of the artwork, in addition to, as of his fourth receipt posting, postage. The subject matter of the drawings is often determined by Monk's technical prowess. The artist has lamented, for example, that he cannot draw much by Louise Lawler, "especially her photo works," given their technical complexity.
