At a distance and close up, this is as autobiographic as Richard Prince gets. Photographed between 1996 and 1999, Prince strives to present a democratic view of the surroundings of his home in upstate New York. Both humorous and contemplative, his removed shots reveal people in a microcosmic, geographic zone that feels welcoming but desolate.
Published on the occasion of the artist's exhibitions Upstate at MAK Center for Art and Architecture, L.A. March 1-May 28, 2000 and 4 x 4 at MAK Vienna, March 15-May 28, 2000.
