All glittery eye candy, Shaw's large-scale pictures depict coral reefs teeming with sea life—not to mention bugs, butterflies, angels and demons. Shaw, who was born in Calcutta in 1974 and raised in Kashmir before moving to London in his late teens, uses industrial auto paints to produce his enamel-like technique, which resembles cloisonn. Various passages also suggest Balinese batik, handmade Venetian paper and inlay jewelry crafted from semi-precious stones. Catalogue of exhibition at Deitch Projects NY, from September - October 8, 2005.
