Painted between June 2008 and June 2010 after reading Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time, David Richardson created his multitude of portraits for Resemblance based on Proust's characters out of "involuntary inspiration and involuntary memory" so indicative of Proust's own writing style. Velvety in finish, the pages' smooth surface reveal the complexity of the paintings' bravura textures and myriads of color. Each painting is underscored with a caption by Richardson. On the facing pages a chosen excerpt from In Search of Lost Time serves as a reference to the character and inspiration for the painting.
Richardson's portraits in Resemblance capture the endless possibilities of the way we remember Proust's characters and his descriptions. Humorous, serious, austere, and uncanny are only a few adjectives to describe Richardson's remarkable figures in Resemblance. Having embarked on such a monumental task, Richardson seems to have effortlessly channeled each of Proust's fabulous and sundry personas and given us a visual compendium to Proust's epic tome.
