Featuring upwards of 80 color plates and artist sketches, an interview translated into German and English, and an exhibition chronology, Passing Through manages to stuff a lot of material into Scanlan's first monograph. Scanlan's work is reminiscent of set design: he constructs objects, typically made of wood, adorns or arranges them within a larger scene (generally a version of an ideal domestic), and then photographs them in ways that examine and manipulate lighting. As Scanlan explains in his interview with Julian Heynen, "Some of my best products are works of art," making visible that blurred line between art as sacred transcendent and art as material commodity.
